Typical flooring costs - material and labor

Carpet-deadens noise and is warm underfoot in the colder months and costs $2.50-$4.00 per sq/ft. 10 year realistic lifespan, tough on allergy sufferers (especially wall-to-wall carpeting which can trap dust, mites, dander,etc.)

Tile flooring- durable and popular choices in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and other high traffic areas. Costs between $5-$15 per sq/ft. cracking in grout and tile very common. Can be hard to find replacements and costly to repair.

Hardwood Floors-give a classy look to any room, fairly durable, and easy to maintain. However when high traffic areas wear out it is a major job to refurbish. (usually means being out of your home for days.)Costs between $6-$15 per sq/ft

Stone- is as durable as tile, and like hardwoods ad class to any room. Very costly to install; expect to pay $7.50-$20 per sq/ft. (the same look can be achieved in concrete for a fraction of the cost.)

Linoleum/vinyl- cheapest and easiest to maintain of the common flooring material. Available in numerous patterns and colors. Cheap is the key word here, enough said. cost between $2.50-$4 per sq/ft.
